Syrian Authorities Seized Israeli Weapons

nsnbc : Syrian authorities in Sweida, on Sunday, seized a vehicle loaded with large amounts of weapons, including Israeli-made weapons en route to “rebels”.  Israel provides military support for “rebels”, including the Al-Qaeda linked Jabhat Al-Nusrah via the Golan and other areas.

A local spokesperson in Sweida governorate informed the press that the vehicle was heading to terrorist organizations operating in the eastern countryside of the neighboring Daraa province.

The weapons and munitions that were seized included 7 Israeli-made anti-tank rocket launchers, 62 shells, 128 RPG shells of different kinds, 43 120 mm mortar rounds, 42 82 mm mortar rounds and 100 23 mm machine-gun bullets.

On January 20th, the authorities in Sweida foiled an operation to smuggle a large quantity of ammunition for medium-sized and heavy weapons from eastern Daraa to terrorist organizations in the Syrian desert.

The seizure of Israeli weapons in the region is consistent with a sustained Israeli support of Jabhat al-Nusrah and other extremist Islamist insurgencies in the region. Weapons are being smuggled via the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, the Israeli-occupied Lebanese Sheba Farm area, as well as via Jordan.

The region is also the only region in southwestern Syria where the self-proclaimed Islamic State, a.k.a. ISIS, ISIL or Daesh, holds territory, although is “shares” and in part competes about the territory with Jabhat Al-Nusrah and other insurgencies.

The flow of Israeli weapons via the occupied Golan Heights has been consolidated in 2013, when Israeli machinations resulted in the withdrawal of UNDOF troops from a 12 – 16 km-wide corridor in the Golan Heights.

The corridor is among others being used for direct support of Jabhat al-Nusrah and others. This support includes medical services, logistics, intelligence sharing as well as direct Israeli military support of the insurgents, e.g. by providing machine gun and artillery cover.
