Cairo to host Gaza conference Oct 12

TCP : A conference on the reconstruction of Gaza will be held in Cairo Oct. 12 under Egyptian and Norwegian auspices, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told state-owned MENA Tuesday.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and Shoukry met with Norweigan Foreign Minister Børge Brende Tuesday to discuss reconstruction efforts and the situation in the Middle East.

In the meeting, Sisi emphasized a strong link between neglecting the Palestinians’ struggle towards a state of their own for decades, and nurturing a fertile environment for terrorism and extremism in the region, presidential spokesperson Ehab Badawi told reporters.

The president also said the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has to be settled before terrorism expands into more countries, including Europe.

In his Monday visit to Gaza, Brende said that a permanent ceasefire, one with “real opportunities for Palestinians to create a dignified life,” should be ensured while reconstruction takes place, and “you cannot rebuild it to be destroyed again in a year or two,”The Nordic Page reported.

Shoukry told MENA invitations to the conference would be sent out in hours, adding that the conference aims to support Palestinians in the strip and provide materials needed for the reconstruction.

Since the Israeli blockade of Gaza in 2007, Israeli has largely prevented building materials from entering the strips under the premise that they “might be used to build weaponry.”

Gaza reconstruction will cost $7.8 billion, as 17,000 homes were destroyed and over 100,000 were displaced within the 360 km² area, according to the Palestinian Authority.
