U.S. tries to Blackmail Russia into Military Action against Syria
In one of the strongest and clearest statements by Russia on Syria so far, Russia´s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, accused the USA of attempted blackmail to leave a loophole in a UN resolution to allow military action, of being blinded by an ideological goal of regime change, and of being incapable of admitting that they have made yet another mistake. Both U.S. and Russian naval forces are massed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Analysts warn that the chemical weapons deal has delayed, but not mitigated the risk of a regional war with involvement of both superpowers.
Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) , – Russia´s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has made the strongest statements on the United States push for military aggression against Syria yet, saying that the USA is attempting to push Russia into approving a UN resolution, that would allow for military intervention in Syria, in exchange for American support of Syria´s accession to the OPCW. In a statement to Channel 1´s Sunday program, the Russian Foreign Minister said:
“ “Our American partners are starting to blackmail us: ‘If Russia does not support a resolution under Chapter 7, then we will withdraw our support for Syria’s entry into the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). This is a complete departure from what I agreed with Secretary of State John Kerry”.
The USA is pushing for the inclusion of the UN Charter´s Chapter 7, which would potentially allow for a military intervention against Syria. Lavrov sharply criticized his U.S. counterpart and the U.S. Administration for being blinded by a push for regime change and inability to admit mistakes, saying:
“Our partners are blinded by an ideological mission for regime change. … They cannot admit they have made another mistake.”
Lavrov blasted the West for the interventions in Iraq and Libya, stressing that such military interventions only could lead to a catastrophe in the region.
The Russian Foreign Minister called the hand of the West`s War Poker Games and the West´s claims of being interested in a peaceful resolution saying, that if the West really was interested in a peaceful solution to the more than two year-long conflict, they would now be pushing for Syria´s entry into the OPCW in the first place, not for the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
The Russian Foreign Minister addressed the declared U.S-American goal of global, full spectrum dominance with regards to the situation pertaining Syria, saying:
“I am convinced that the West is doing this to demonstrate that they call the shots in the Middle East. This is a totally politicized approach”.
Sergei Lavrov stressed that the case of a military scenario implies that militants would come to power in Syria and that Syria no longer would be a secular state, warning that:
“Up to three quarters of these guys are Jihasists, including the most radical groups such as the al-Nusrah Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, who want to create an Islamic Caliphate in Syria and in neighboring territories. … If our western partners think at least two steps ahead, they cannot but understand it”.
The United States attempt to prevent Syria´s accession to the Oraganization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons could potentially be used as a pretext for positioning Syria as non-compliant with the obligations it has taken upon itself under the US – Russian “deal”. A recent report on nsnbc international also indicates that the UK and Germany are actively involved in creating a pretex for call for military action against Syria on the basis of non-compliance. In the case of the UK and Germany, the report states, there is an attempt to create uncertainties about the import of dual-use chemicals to Syria.
Both US and Russian naval forces are massed in the Eastern Mediterranean, shadowing each other off the Syrian coast. Earlier this month, Russia increased the Russian naval presence in the Mediterranean to ten warships, countering U.S. threats of illegal military strikes against Syria. Experts have warned that the agreement on Syria´s chemical weapons has delayed a potential miltary aggression but that the risk for an illegal US aggression and a Russian military response persists and increases by the day.
